David Turnbull and Glenn Thomas both believe wine is made in the vineyard and work to ensure Tupari wines are the ultimate expression of Upper Awatere terroir.

David optimises nature's potential, deliberately shoot and bunch thinning to achieve low-cropping levels. When harvest approaches Glenn is found in the vineyard tasting the grapes to ensure the flavours are fully mature prior to picking.

Tupari wines carry New Zealand Wine Growers sustainability accreditation and both vigneron and winemaker pursue holistic and sustainable viticulture and winemaking practices, which determine the unique personality of the Tupari portfolio.

Glenn Thomas - Founder & Winemaker

Winemaker Glenn Thomas

A oneology graduate of Roseworthy College, South Australia, Glenn worked in McLaren Vale and the Barossa before moving to the Awatere Valley, New Zealand as the first winemaker for Vavasour Wines. In 1989 he produced the valley's first sauvignon blanc.

More recently Glenn joined Kiwi Oeno, a high profile winemaking consultancy with clients throughout New Zealand, Northern Italy and Southern France. Glenn is a truly global winemaker but his primary focus remains the Awatere Valley and his pivotal role at Tupari.

Tupari design

The Tupari logo and label have been designed to reflect the essence of Tupari - pure and simple - to create world-class, handcrafted wine from the magnificent Tupari estate vineyard in Upper Awatere Valley of Marlborough New Zealand.

The Tupari logo has been designed by Glenn's brother Danny Thomas. Designed to reflect the contemporary elegance of the Tupari wines, Danny drew inspiration from Maori forms as well as the beautiful Tupari grape vines.

The Tupari pattern was designed by Auckland textile designer Patricia Edwards. Called the 'spirit of Tupari', Patricia has created a pattern that uses a stylised 'kowhaiwhai' to symbolise the Awatere River and the Tupari cliffs. Patricia's design gives a beautiful visual depth and meaning to the label.

The Tupari label design was developed by Sydney-based designer Stephanie Martin. Her creativity combined with a great eye for detail have ensured the essence of Tupari is conveyed on every bottle.
